The cold weather in Minnesota can feel endless. The short days and long nights often keep us indoors, searching for ways to stay entertained. Yet, nothing compares to stepping outside into the crisp, invigorating cool air. The North Shore of Lake Superior transforms into a snowy wonderland, but most campgrounds close for the season. Shipwreck Creek Campground at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park stands out as one of the few that remains open, offering a unique cold weather camping experience.

Discovering Shipwreck Creek Campground in Early Spring

Nestled on a forested hillside within Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Shipwreck Creek Campground opened in 2022 with a fresh approach to camping on Minnesota’s North Shore. It combines modern comforts with the wild, windswept character of Lake Superior’s shoreline. The campground welcomes all types of campers, from those with large RVs to tent campers seeking solitude beneath the pines.

Preparing for Cold Weather Camping at Shipwreck Creek

Cold weather camping requires thoughtful preparation to stay safe and comfortable. Here are some practical tips for your trip:

  • Dress in layers: Use moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers to stay warm and dry.

  • Bring warm sleeping bags and blankets: Temperatures can drop quickly in the early spring and winter. Make sure you have plenty of warm things to cozy into.

  • Carry extra fuel and food: Cold weather increases calorie needs, and you may want to spend more time warming up by a stove or fire. You'll need to purchase firewood at the ranger station. Cutting or finding your own is prohibited in the park. Each bundle will cost $8 which you can pay via card when the ranger station is open, or a cash collection box for when the station is closed.

  • Know the campground rules and winter access points: Shipwreck Creek remains open, but some roads or trails may be closed or require special equipment like snowshoes or skis.

Activities to Enjoy at Shipwreck Creek Campground in Snowy Conditions

Camping at Shipwreck Creek offers more than just a place to stay. The surrounding park and shoreline provide plenty of ways to enjoy the season:

  • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing: Trails wind through the forest and along the lake, offering stunning views of snow-covered cliffs and frozen waves. You can rent snowshoes for $6 at the park office. Check ahead of time for availability.

  • Tour Split Rock Lighthouse: One of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks, offering tours, exhibits, and dramatic cliffside views. Hours can vary based on season typical open March 1 – April 30, 2026: Thursday–Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m and May 15 – October 15 (Typical Peak): Open daily, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • Photography: Capture the contrast of white snow against dark pines and the iconic Split Rock Lighthouse dusted with snow. Or spot the a variety of mushrooms growing off the birch trees!

  • Wildlife watching: Look for tracks of deer, foxes, and birds adapted to cold conditions.

  • Stargazing: The clear, cold nights, with little light pollution reveal bright stars and the possibility of catching the northern lights.

  • Campfire gatherings: Use designated fire rings to warm up and share stories, roasting marshmallows or cooking simple meals.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Cold Weather Camping Trip

  • Arrive during daylight: Setting up camp in daylight makes the process easier and safer.

  • Use LED lanterns and headlamps: Early spring nights are long, and reliable lighting is essential.

  • Plan simple meals: Cold weather cooking can be challenging; bring easy-to-prepare foods and a reliable stove.

  • Respect the environment: Pack out all trash and follow Leave No Trace principles. The dumpsters were snowed in and hard to access. Be prepared to take your trash with you.
